Breaking Down the Breakdown Facts for Winter

By November 6, 2014 June 15th, 2015 Fleet Management, Maintenance, NationaLease, Road Rescue

Don’t get left out in the cold this winter. Make sure you schedule winterizing your fleet.

According to AccuWeather, it’s going to be another bad winter to be on the road: bitterly cold and snowy for Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the country; ice and snow for the Tennessee Valley and Northern Plains; wet conditions in the South; and for the Northern Plains, well…who knows? However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts warmer than average temperatures this winter for parts of the West and Northeast, less snow for Chicago, and cooler than average temperatures for much of the South.

Confused? Well, it is the weather we’re talking about, where nothing is ever definite. But, just because you don’t know how bad the winter may or may not be when it comes to cold, snow, and ice doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be preparing your fleets for the worst-case scenario, especially when it comes to the possibility of truck breakdowns.

That’s why we always recommend to our customers that they don’t wait till the bad weather hits to start “winterizing” their fleet. Breakdowns are especially difficult during the winter, so the more you can avoid them by focusing on proper maintenance, the better. So don’t forget the basics:

  • Keep tires inflated and, if you don’t have snow tires, make sure chains are available and easily accessible
  • Test batteries. Seems so obvious, but sometimes complacency gets in the way
  • Check antifreeze levels
  • Use de-icer washer fluid

Even if you do all this, breakdowns, unfortunately, do occur. That’s why companies should sign up with a third-party breakdown service provider. Imagine this scenario…it’s 3AM on December 24, one of your trucks breaks down in the middle of nowhere and your dispatchers are off for the holiday. Instead of burdening your driver with having to find help, they can make one call to a reputable breakdown service provider and know that help is on the way. Our Road Rescue customers know that our state-of-the-art call center is staffed 24/7/365 so there’s always someone there to answer the phone. It’s vital, if you’re an over-the-road fleet, that your breakdown service have coast-to-coast service providers with highly qualified maintenance personnel.

Old Man Winter may or may not pack much of a punch this year, but you don’t want to get caught with your guard down so start preparing your fleets today!
