Sessions on the issues most top-of-mind for truck leasing financial officers, as well as sharing of best practices among the members were the highlight of this year’s Financial Officers Meeting.
On October 20-21, a number of NationaLease members’ financial officers met in Fort Lauderdale, FL to share best practices and learn from experts in a number of fields. Jane Clark, Vice President of Member Services for NationaLease, opened the meeting and introduced this year’s meeting chair, Donna Blanc of Hub Truck NationaLease. After introductions, Donna welcomed the meeting’s first speaker, Tom James, President of the Truck Renting and Leasing Association (TRALA), who reviewed upcoming changes to the International Registration Plan as well as other issues that TRALA is engaged in on behalf of the industry. Brad Plummer, Sr. VP with Cottingham & Butler, followed with a presentation on insurance captives, and two representatives from Grant Thornton, LLC, Alex Rhodes and Mathew Abraham, provided updates on FASB and changes to tangible property regulations.
The afternoon session opened with Robert Villanueva of the U.S. Secret Service. Robert shared the latest trends in cybercrime from his experience working for the Miami Electronic Crimes Task Force. He gave an eye-opening review of computer crimes, hacking cases, identity theft, and a look into the magnitude of these crimes. Jane Clark followed with an update on the programs available through NationaLease including updates on insurance programs, the new NationaLease Emergency Services and Fuel app, and information on the Career site on nationalease.com. Jane then introduced Dean Vicha, President of NationaLease, who shared the latest developments in NationaLease’s new technology platforms. The afternoon concluded with one of the perennially favorite sessions, the Best Practices Roundtable. The members shared information on a variety of topics such as fuel tax reporting, ELDs, violation management, Pre-pass, and credit check services.
The second day opened with Mike Skordeles, Senior Vice President with Investment Advisory Group and SunTrust Banks, Inc., who shared an informative economic presentation that highlighted trends and gave insights on the near and long-term future. Aoifa O’Donnell, Chief Executive Officer of National Employee Assistance Providers, provided an overview of Employee Assistance Programs and how they can help not only with enhancing employee well-being, but also a company’s bottom line. Phillip Saussy, Senior Vice President, J. Smith Lanier & Company, wrapped up the meeting with an examination of Private Exchanges in the employer-sponsored marketplace and a discussion about how to determine if it is a viable option for your company.
