Happy National Truck Drivers Appreciation Week! NationaLease appreciates every driver with our member companies for going the extra mile all year long! Today, we’d like to recognize Jamie Smith with Kris-Way Truck Leasing. The story of how he shares the free time of his layovers in Eastport, Maine, was submitted by Kelly Negm. Thank you, Kris-Way, and thank you, Jamie Smith!
Jamie Smith has been with Kris-Way Truck Leasing, Inc., a NationaLease member, for three years. In those three years, he has proven to be an asset not just to Kris-Way, but also to the community in which he finds himself almost daily. You see, Jamie frequently drives to Eastport, Maine, for the U.S. Postal Service mail pick-up and finds himself with some serious layover time. Yet, Jamie is not one to sit idle. One day as he was going by a cemetery, he met a guy he knew who works for the Public Works Department, and they got to chatting. Jamie learned that the Public Works Department was down a crew member and Jamie got to thinking. He thought, “Why not?” and shortly thereafter, with the town’s blessings and gratitude, Jamie was on volunteer duty at the cemetery. Now, many people might think, “Cemetery?” But not Jamie. What Jamie found while keeping the cemetery clean and the grass neatly cut was a sense of peace and tranquility. While he picked up twigs and small branches, he discovered just how many veterans were buried there–veterans who fought in the War of 1812. This made Jamie realize that the final resting place for so many should be kept in the best shape possible so that when visitors come to the cemetery, they can feel the same peace and tranquility that Jamie does.
Jamie takes great pride in being a truck driver for Kris-Way, but he also takes pride in being able to help those who need it. After all, isn’t giving back what life is all about?
