Roadcheck 2019 Is Just Around the Corner. Is Your Fleet Ready?

This year, the focus is on steering and suspension systems, so both technicians and drivers need to heed any warning signs.

Last month, I posted an IdeaXchange blog about the upcoming Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Roadcheck, which will occur June 4-6. I think, with such a potentially consequential event about to occur, a quick reminder is certainly appropriate.

During last year’s 72-hour safety blitz, more than 12,000 trucks and drivers were taken out of service. The negative impact this can have on businesses is significant. Each year, this safety check conducts Level 1 inspections; however, there is usually a specific focus. In 2018, that focus was on HOS compliance. This year, the focus is on steering and suspension systems.

I would recommend reading my full blog, Steering into Roadcheck Safety for details on how to prepare for Roadcheck 2019. In the meantime, here are some telltale signs that you may have problems with your steering and suspension:

  • Unusual noise when turning, applying the brakes, accelerating or driving over bumps
  • Excessive play or binding in the steering wheel
  • Rough steering or vibration
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Vehicle leans to one side
  • Vehicle seems to wander, pulling to one side or back and forth while being driven

Make sure your drivers and technicians are acutely aware of these signs and that your technicians, when doing regularly scheduled repair and maintenance, check each vehicle for tolerances on steering and suspension components.

Good luck, everyone!
